A Utah CEO's passion for education turns into big business | The ...

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Chet Linton is CEO and president of School Improvement Network of Midvale, whose offices are in a remodeled former bowling alley and a former Safeway next door. The company supplies online and on demand videos and other materials to help teachers improve their performance in the classroom.

Chet Linton is passionate about teachers, and they seem to feel the same way about the training products his surging Utah company markets to schools.

At a recent press conference announcing a business/education initiative to improve education in Utah, Linton choked up during his presentation when he got to the part about teachers.

?

School Improvement Network

1991 ? Company founded by the Lintons to offer videotapes of good teachers at work

1999 ? An early online presence takes shape

2006 ? Company adopts aggressive growth strategy, launching PD 360, as an entirely online, on-demand service

2010 ? Owners bring in equity capital and founders John and Blanch Linton retire

"I?m not an educator, I?m a crazy entrepreneur who gets a little passionate," said Linton, CEO of the School Improvement Network of Midvale. "We need to help them be effective."

It?s that fire, plus management savvy and good strategic timing, that have propelled Linton?s company to the forefront in delivering teacher professional development materials to schools around the country.

School Improvement Network?s sales of professional development videos and materials have skyrocketed since 2006, when the company made the switch from DVDs to delivering the company?s videos and other materials online, on-demand and over any high-speed Internet connection. Linton said schools representing almost 900,000 U.S. teachers, a bit less than a third of the nation?s total, have bought subscriptions.

"Our goal was to turn the market on its ear," Linton said in an interview at the company?s Midvale offices, in a remodeled bowling alley that is next door to a former Safeway that the company also occupies.

School Improvement Network?s greatest asset is the 3,000 or so videos of education experts and actual classroom footage from teachers recognized for effective teaching methods. They have been gathered since the company was founded in 1991 by Linton?s parents, John and Blanch, Jordan School District teachers who first named it the Video Journal of Education.

John Linton also had a background in video and film, and had done work in those mediums for the state. Motivated by frustrations with his own teaching experiences and inspired from a visit to an Oregon school, he had the idea of creating a "quality teacher series" by filming the best teachers at work in their classrooms, said Chet Linton.

With Chet Linton and his wife on board, the company launched and its videos also began to include sessions with education experts and best-selling authors, covering what teaching practices work best in the classroom.

The company?s products were originally based on VHS videotapes, the dominant portable media of that time, and later DVDs. There were drawbacks, though.

story continues below

Chet Linton recalls that he " would have superintendents come up to me at different meetings and say, ?I got every one of your products in my office.? Of course, I?m thinking, ?Great, how many teachers are going to go to the superintendent and [ask for] that video on how to discipline [a] classroom more effectively?? "

The key was to figure out how to reach the end customer more directly. As early as 1999, School Improvement Network has had an online presence but video streaming was slow and the quality was low. In addition, many schools were not wired for Internet access or had slow connections that made streaming impractical.

The challenge was "how do we get something on every teacher?s desk, how do we change practices and help kids really improve and help teachers believe they can do it," Chet Linton said,

Fast-forward to 2006, when a confluence of events changed everything.

At one of its meetings, the company?s directors were asked to discuss whether School Improvement Network would remain what Linton calls a "lifestyle company," a small (25 to 30 employees), family-run affair like it had been since its founding.

"I got up and said, ?OK, what do we want to do?? " Linton recalls. "Do we want to build a great business or do we just want to sell this thing."

The Lintons, including two of Chet?s brothers ? one a graduate of Columbia business school, the other the University of Southern California film school ? decided they needed to build the business, even if they eventually sold it.

Scientists discover that shape matters in DNA nanoparticle therapy

Saturday, October 13, 2012
This illustration depicts DNA molecules (light green), packaged into nanoparticles by using a polymer with two different segments. One segment (teal) carries a positive charge that binds it to the DNA, and the other (brown) forms a protective coating on the particle surface. By adjusting the solvent surrounding these molecules, the Johns Hopkins and Northwestern researchers were able to control the shape of the nanoparticles. The team?s animal tests showed that a nanoparticle?s shape could dramatically affect how effectively it delivers gene therapy to the cells. The cartoon images in the foreground, obtained though computational modeling, matched closely with the gray background images, which were collected through transmission electron microscopy. Credit: Credits: Wei Qu, Northwestern University, simulation cartoons; Xuan Jiang, Johns Hopkins University, microscopic images

Researchers from Johns Hopkins and Northwestern universities have discovered how to control the shape of nanoparticles that move DNA through the body and have shown that the shapes of these carriers may make a big difference in how well they work in treating cancer and other diseases.

This study, to be published in the Oct. 12 online edition of the journal Advanced Materials, is also noteworthy because this gene therapy technique does not use a virus to carry DNA into cells. Some gene therapy efforts that rely on viruses have posed health risks.

"These nanoparticles could become a safer and more effective delivery vehicle for gene therapy, targeting genetic diseases, cancer and other illnesses that can be treated with gene medicine," said Hai-Quan Mao, an associate professor of materials science and engineering in Johns Hopkins' Whiting School of Engineering.

Mao, co-corresponding author of the Advanced Materials article, has been developing nonviral nanoparticles for gene therapy for a decade. His approach involves compressing healthy snippets of DNA within protective polymer coatings. The particles are designed to deliver their genetic payload only after they have moved through the bloodstream and entered the target cells. Within the cells, the polymer degrades and releases DNA. Using this DNA as a template, the cells can produce functional proteins that combat disease.

A major advance in this work is that Mao and his colleagues reported that they were able to "tune" these particles in three shapes, resembling rods, worms and spheres, which mimic the shapes and sizes of viral particles. "We could observe these shapes in the lab, but we did not fully understand why they assumed these shapes and how to control the process well," Mao said. These questions were important because the DNA delivery system he envisions may require specific, uniform shapes.

To solve this problem, Mao sought help about three years ago from colleagues at Northwestern. While Mao works in a traditional wet lab, the Northwestern researchers are experts in conducting similar experiments with powerful computer models.

Erik Luijten, associate professor of materials science and engineering and of applied mathematics at Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science and co-corresponding author of the paper, led the computational analysis of the findings to determine why the nanoparticles formed into different shapes.

"Our computer simulations and theoretical model have provided a mechanistic understanding, identifying what is responsible for this shape change," Luijten said. "We now can predict precisely how to choose the nanoparticle components if one wants to obtain a certain shape."

The use of computer models allowed Luijten's team to mimic traditional lab experiments at a far faster pace. These molecular dynamic simulations were performed on Quest, Northwestern's high-performance computing system. The computations were so complex that some of them required 96 computer processors working simultaneously for one month.

In their paper, the researchers also wanted to show the importance of particle shapes in delivering gene therapy. Team members conducted animal tests, all using the same particle materials and the same DNA. The only difference was in the shape of the particles: rods, worms and spheres.

"The worm-shaped particles resulted in 1,600 times more gene expression in the liver cells than the other shapes," Mao said. "This means that producing nanoparticles in this particular shape could be the more efficient way to deliver gene therapy to these cells."

The particle shapes used in this research are formed by packaging the DNA with polymers and exposing them to various dilutions of an organic solvent. DNA's aversion to the solvent, with the help of the team's designed polymer, causes the nanoparticles to contract into a certain shape with a "shield" around the genetic material to protect it from being cleared by immune cells.

Verlander pitches Tigers past A's, back to ALCS

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ? Miguel Cabrera danced on a chair in one corner of the visiting clubhouse, puffing a cigar. Prince Fielder doused his young sons, Jadyn and Haven, with non-alcoholic sparkling wine, then handed them each a bottle to shake and spray.

Just when the celebration seemed to be ending, Justin Verlander ran through the door and screamed "Whoo!"

On the mound and in the clubhouse, Verlander made sure Detroit's postseason party wasn't over yet.

The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner and MVP backed up his credentials in the biggest moment of the season Thursday night, throwing a four-hitter in the decisive Game 5 to get the Tigers back to the AL championship series for a second straight year with a 6-0 victory over the overachieving Oakland Athletics.

"This is where legends are made," catcher Alex Avila said. "Tonight, he basically put us on his back and said, 'We're not going to lose.'"

Verlander delivered in the division series a day after closer Jose Valverde failed to hold a two-run lead in the ninth that pushed Detroit to the brink after jumping out to a 2-0 series lead back home.

Verlander gave Valverde ? and every other arm ? the night off.

The right-hander tossed his first career postseason shutout and complete game with a 122-pitch masterpiece. He struck out 11 and walked one.

"He had a look in his eye today," manager Jim Leyland said. "A complete-game look in his eye."

The Tigers flew back to Detroit to see if they will face either the New York Yankees or Baltimore Orioles. That series is tied at two games apiece heading into Game 5 on Friday night in New York. Game 1 of the ALCS is scheduled for Saturday.

If Baltimore wins, it will start in Detroit. Otherwise the Motown crew is headed to the Big Apple.

"These moments you can't even describe. But it does get better every round, and we want that feeling," Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said, his white-shirt soaked in bubbly. "We've felt this before. We want that even better feeling."

Verlander made sure they'll have a chance.

He was so sharp nobody in the bullpen ever got up to throw. Verlander struck out 22 in his wins on both ends of this nail-biting series, and saved his best for last.

After the Tigers squandered two chances to clinch the series, including blowing a two-run, ninth-inning lead in Game 4, Leyland left it all up to Verlander, just as he said he would.

"I think it's one of those things I expected to go nine innings," Verlander said. "In this situation, in a Game 5, I wanted to go all the way."

Austin Jackson hit an RBI double in the third and a run-scoring single during a four-run seventh. Fielder also had an RBI single.

The Tigers are on to another ALCS despite getting just one RBI all series from Triple Crown winner Cabrera ? on a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the final game, no less. Booed by the yellow towel-twirling sellout crowd of 36,393 each time he stepped into the batter's box, Cabrera finished 5 for 20, and it was his blooper dropped by center fielder Coco Crisp in a 5-4 Game 2 victory Sunday that allowed two runs to score.

Leave it to Verlander to erase all the mistakes ? and Leyland all but called his ace's latest gem.

The Detroit skipper gave the ball to his 17-game winner and said beforehand the Tigers would likely win or lose with the hard-throwing right-hander on the mound.

"Justin Verlander's a pretty tough chore for anybody," Leyland said.

And, against the A's ? or anybody else, for that matter ? Verlander usually wins.

Verlander recorded the most strikeouts in a shutout of a winner-take-all postseason game, topping Sandy Koufax's 10 in the 1965 World Series against Minnesota.

"When you're going into pressure situations like this, there's nobody better to have on the mound than Justin," Jackson said.

Verlander followed up an 11-strikeout outing in Detroit's 3-1 Game 1 win Saturday with another overpowering performance in his 10th postseason start. He improved to 3-0 with a 2.11 ERA in three postseason starts against the A's and upped his career mark to 5-4 with 2.15 ERA in 10 starts at the Coliseum.

Verlander had allowed one earned run with a 0.69 ERA in beating the A's twice during the regular season.

"He's always tough. You go out there and you battle him the best that you can," Crisp said. "Today he had some of his best stuff of the year."

Detroit finally got to party in a visiting clubhouse that for the sixth straight game was prepped for a possible clinch celebration.

The Texas Rangers were in town last week needing one victory to win the AL West but dropped all three to lose the division to the surprising A's in game No. 162.

On Wednesday night, plastic covering the floor and lockers was torn down in all of about 40 seconds after Valverde allowed three runs in the bottom of the ninth as Oakland won with another walkoff in a season full of them.

This time, the Tigers let loose.

Players quickly ran to a table to grab another celebratory bottle when Verlander entered the clubhouse, drenching him in all directions and chanting "Cy Young! Cy Young!"

"It was awesome and horrible at the same time because you can't see a thing," he said. "Your eyes are burning and all I want to do is look up and celebrate with my teammates. And all I can do is look down and shut my eyes."

After Seth Smith grounded out to end the game, the A's stayed on the field to greet the fans who were still on their feet chanting "Let's Go Oakland!" Verlander waved toward the Oakland players in a classy acknowledgment, and Leyland walked over to wish A's manager Bob Melvin well.

Detroit's offense did more than enough to give Verlander a cushion on another relatively quiet night by Cabrera and Fielder, the team's $214 million cleanup hitter who signed as a free agent from Milwaukee in the winter.

Cabrera went five straight games without an RBI on four different occasions during the regular season, but didn't extend that to the playoffs when Ryan Cook plunked him with the bases loaded in the seventh.

The upstart A's were attempting to become the ninth team to rally from a 2-0 deficit in a best-of-five series, but couldn't match the cross-bay Giants after San Francisco won at Cincinnati earlier in the day to reach the NL championship series.

So much for all that chatter about another Bay Bridge World Series in Northern California like the earthquake-interrupted Series in 1989 swept by the A's.

Oakland struck out 50 times in a series of swings and misses after riding high only a week ago, stunning the two-time reigning AL champion Rangers on the regular season's final day to win the AL West. The strikeouts were the most in A's franchise history for a five-game series.

The A's payroll of $59.5 million is lowest in the majors. But the last game was the only lopsided one.

Detroit eliminated Oakland again after the Tigers pulled off a four-game sweep in the 2006 AL championship series.

"We didn't think it was going to end today, not for a second," Melvin said. "We knew we were going up against a good pitcher. That didn't mean we didn't think we were going to win. We've gone up against good pitchers this year. And it's a bit of a shock when it finally does end. It was a heck of a story. It was a heck of a run for us."

The Tigers now look to get through another round after falling in six games to the Rangers in last year's ALCS.

NOTES: Josh Reddick, who hit a team-leading 32 homers, struck out 10 times for the most by an A's player in a postseason series. The only person with more Ks than Reddick in a division series was Seattle's Bret Boone with 11 in 2001. ... The A's have lost eight of their last nine postseason series. ... Cabrera has reached base safely in all 16 of his postseason games with the Tigers. ... Verlander is Detroit's career postseason leader in strikeouts (70) and wins (5).

Mystery giant eyeball on Fla. beach may be squid's

MIAMI (AP) ? Word that a giant eyeball washed up on a South Florida beach has created a buzz on the Internet and in the marine biology community.

The huge, blue eyeball may have come from a deep sea squid or a large sword fish, said Heather Bracken-Grissom, an assistant professor in the marine science program at Florida International University in Miami.

A man found the eyeball while taking a morning stroll along Pompano Beach just north of Fort Lauderdale. He contacted state wildlife officials, who took possession of the softball-sized eyeball.

As soon as pictures hit the Internet on Thursday, Bracken-Grissom said she started talking with her colleagues.

"Any time something weird and crazy washes up on the beach, it's definitely interesting," she said.

The professor and her colleagues concluded that the eyeball's lens and pupil are similar in shape to that of a deep sea squid. She noted that a deep sea squid's eyeball can be as large as a soccer ball and can easily become dislodged.

The mystery likely won't be solved until testing on the eyeball is completed at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg.

"It's going to be very interesting to see what the genetic analysis shows," Bracken-Grissom said.

She said news of the giant eyeball traveled quickly. Relatives from California even called, asking her opinion.

"Something like this gets the public very excited about the mysterious realm of the ocean," she said..

Jerry, my Friday starts on Tuesdays, are you explaining to me, I do not get to share the sauce on my weekend?

On a level playing field, I think the desktop, or Notebook will still be a viable product for work & play in the future, but our input devices will change, as Speech recognition technology becomes a reality, and Gimp/photoshop, Inkscape/illustrator is done with hand movement rather than a tablet/mouse device.

But there are many users that only want to watch films and enjoy business or social contact, the mobile tablet/phone is perfect tool for that type of computing style. Size and eye sight might be one variables determining your computer of choice...

Since the Linux Netbook introduction (before Microsoft destroyed that market with overpriced hardware requirements): I always questioned why it did not become the phone, using an electronic tethered ear piece. The 7 inch Linux netbook was the perfect tool as a mobile computing device, that easily could have contained your most needed mobile applications, along with a daily planner, address book & cell phone. A Bluetooth ear piece with distant alarm to prevent your netbook from growing legs and walking away. The ear piece would also have been an efficient directional locating device for the forgetful person (maybe channel two as a car keys locator).

Ah, desktop, why would it be worse for Linux that it was before? All the factors that were working for Linux before are still valid today.
1. is still costs nothing compared to Windows and Mac OS X
2. Windows is still a security nightmare and it still sucks in many and diverse ways.
3. people still want freedom and don't want to depend on companies like Microsoft or Apple
4. if you want to run a Unixy OS you don't need special hardware like in case of Mac OS X (I think legally you can't run OS X on non-Apple hardware, and practically not all the hardware works fine with OS X.

What has changed? Windows sucks less therefore we need to be afraid for Linux? Last time I checked I still had to pay at least $99 for Windows and it would still require activation from Microsoft. But even if it Windows was free I would still use Linux.

By the way, people will use more devices, I have a number in my house already including an iPad and an Android phone and a Kindle (which uses Linux by the way), however I don't like to browse forums and type on iPad, just like radio didn't disappear when TV became popular desktop computers are not going to disappear because people have cellphones on which they can check their e-mails...

Post # 308209 adrian, the question i was asking was generally about the desktop as a platform - completely OS agnostic. it seems that as tablets gain market share the fewer desktop mfgrs there will be, and the fewer choices that people will have.

it's anyone's guess what sort of shake up this will cause. it will result in companies getting out of the desktop biz, or going out of biz, that's for certain. but will people like myself, who like to have a desktop system, still have the option?

Post # 308213 Desktops may migrate to mostly All-in-ones. But there will always be a decent market for a full Desktop. Segmenting the market into areas of need and 'style', and cost I suppose.

It might be that a big Desktop becomes a needed feature of a new house. A lot of houses are getting wired for digital OOTB. I don't see it dying at all.

University official on leave for signing anti-gay marriage petition

By Miranda Leitsinger, NBC News

The chief diversity officer at Gallaudet University was put on administrative leave Wednesday after the school learned she had signed a petition supporting efforts to reverse Maryland?s same-sex marriage law, media reports say.

Dr. Angela McCaskill signed the petition at her church after her preacher spoke against gay marriage, the Planet DeafQueer blog reported on Monday, citing a Gallaudet faculty member who first spotted the administrator?s name on the document. Voters in Maryland will decide on Nov. 6 whether to keep a state law passed earlier this year approving same-sex marriage.

?I want to inform the community that I have placed Dr. Angela McCaskill on paid administrative leave effective immediately. It recently came to my attention that Dr. McCaskill has participated in a legislative initiative that some feel is inappropriate for an individual serving as Chief Diversity Officer; however, other individuals feel differently,? Gallaudet University President T. Alan Hurwitz said in a statement.

?I will use the extended time while she is on administrative leave to determine the appropriate next steps taking into consideration the duties of this position at the university. In the meantime an interim Chief Diversity Officer will be announced in the near future."

Gallaudet spokeswoman Catherine Murphy told Buzzfeed that the university did not have "a policy against political participation." When asked about the nature of the petition and if the university had any policy regarding such political participation, Murphy told NBC News in an email: ?For the moment we are sticking with this (Hurwitz) statement. Please understand that in an administrative personnel matter we won't be saying anything more until we get complete clarity on what took place.?

McCaskill was the first deaf African American female to earn a Ph.D. from Gallaudet, where she has worked for 23 years in various roles, including becoming the deputy to the president and associate provost of diversity and inclusion in 2011, according to her biography on the university website. She did not respond to an email seeking comment and it was not possible to leave a phone message.

Late Wednesday, the campaign seeking to keep the same-sex marriage law urged the university to reinstate McCaskill.

"We strongly disagree with the decision to put the chief diversity officer on leave and hope she is reinstated immediately," Josh Levin, campaign manager of Marylanders for Marriage Equality, said in a statement. "Everyone is entitled to free speech and to their own opinion about Question 6 (the referendum on the ballot), which is about treating everyone fairly and equally under the law."

For 1st time, gay marriage may win statewide vote
US immigration chief: Same-sex ties are family ties
Did Supreme Court justice tip hand on gay marriage?
Appeals court: Denying federal benefits to same-sex couples is unconstitutional
Despite marriage progress, gay couples face big hurdles to parenthood

Reaction to the news was mixed on the university?s Facebook page, with some wanting to give McCaskill another chance or to learn more about what happened, and others saying she shouldn?t be in the job.

Teddi Fishman, director of the International Center for Academic Integrity at Clemson University, said she would ?stop short of saying that this case necessarily involves a lack of integrity.?

?If a person is responsible for ensuring equal opportunities for students regardless of their gender or sexual orientation and that person goes on record as being opposed to equal opportunities for people based on their gender and sexual orientation, it certainly appears that there is some incongruity,? she wrote NBC News in an email.

However, she noted that people also have the right to participate in the democratic process regardless of their work obligations unless they have agreed otherwise or are legally prohibited from doing so. The issue of marriage equality is not the same as the task of ensuring equality in academic settings and some could argue there were reasons -- not based on discrimination -- for opposing gay marriage, she added.

?I would feel comfortable saying, however, that if I were supervising Dr. McCaskill, I would want to talk with her to make sure that her commitment to equal opportunity to all students does indeed extend to them all and to monitor the situation more carefully than I might have done had she not signed the anti-marriage petition,? she said.

A Baltimore Sun poll in late September found that Maryland voters favored legalizing same-sex marriage, 49 percent to 39 percent. The survey of 804 likely voters was conducted from Sept. 25 to 27 by research firm OpinionWorks. The margin of error was 3.5 percentage points.

Our support (and your support) helps to fund great content and other investments for lots of other UK websites, including blogs, magazines, forums and more. We?re always on the lookout for more advertising opportunities, so if the majority of your visitors are UK-based and you have decent traffic, let us know at marketing [at] heartinternet.co.uk.

Supporting small businesses and freelancers

We know you?re on a budget, so wherever possible we try to make life easier for you. On average we share over 2,500 resources, tips, tutorials, articles and freebies every year to help you with your website and/or business. All the links we share are handpicked and carefully reviewed to make sure they are interesting, helpful and high quality resources. You can find them on Pinterest, Google+, Facebook, Twitter and here on the blog (and we try to avoid posting the same thing more than once where possible).

We also offer 70+ free one click installs of all the software you need to power your website and business, whether you?re looking for a simple WordPress install or an invoicing solution you can get set up in seconds. There are lots of excellent applications you can use to power your business or projects for free, and we?re picked out the best and most practical solutions to save you even more time.

Resellers get exclusive Heart Internet discounts on a range of our most popular products and services, and we offer plenty of discounts and special offers to all existing and new customers throughout the year. We want to make the web affordable for everyone.

Keeping Heart Internet completely UK based

Unlike many other hosting companies, all our staff ? including all levels of our support team ? are based in-house in the UK. As well as creating and maintaining safe jobs here, it also has a positive effect on many other local and national businesses who receive our custom (even web hosts need stationery! And caffeine. Lots of caffeine).

Hiring UK designers

Our in-house team is brilliant, and we?ve also commissioned work from our customers, including two icon sets, one of which is pictured below (download them both for free from our Resources page). We?re planning to expand our involvement in this area significantly over the coming years for the dual benefits of supporting UK designers and helping to provide more excellent high quality resources for you. If you?re a designer or a developer interested in producing premium-quality resources for us in exchange for hosting credit or cold hard cash, please get in touch via marketing [at] heartinternet.co.uk.

Giveaways and contests

In the past two and a half years alone we?ve given away over ?8,500 in useful prizes to lucky winners, including *deep breath* two 27? iMacs, fifteen Amazon, iTunes and Play.com vouchers, ?2847 in web hosting and domain names, a Motorola Xoom tablet, three iPods, three Google Nexus 7 tablets, a MacBook Air and much more!

So next time you buy or renew something from Heart Internet, embrace the warm fuzzy glow. You?re helping to make the creative web industry what it is today.
