Reuters: Wal-Mart looking into crowd-sourcing online delivery

Reuters WalMart looking into crowdsourcing online delivery

Walmart is considering the slightly insane sounding idea of using its in-store customers to deliver online orders to help it compete with bricks and mortar-less competitors like Amazon, according to Reuters. The big box outfit currently ships internet purchases from just 25 of its stores using the likes of FedEx to handle delivery, but plans to drastically increase that number going forward. In theory, customers could sign up for the chore and drop packages off to customers who are on their route home in exchange for a discount. CEO Joel Anderson he could "see a path to where this is crowd-sourced," adding that "this is at the brain-storming stage, but it's possible in a year or two." Naturally, there's a gauntlet of insurance, theft, fraud and legal issues Walmart would need to run first -- along with the slightly skeevy idea of having a random stranger show up with your packages.

Turing machine built from artificial muscles may lead to smart prosthetics

Turing machine built from artificial muscles could lead to smart prosthetics

In the hierarchy of computing hardware, artificial muscle doesn't really even register: it's usually a target for action, not the perpetrator. The University of Auckland has figured out a way to let those muscles play a more active role. Its prototype Turing machine uses a set of electroactive polymer muscles to push memory elements into place and squeeze piezoresistive switches, performing virtually any calculation through flexing. The proof-of-concept computer won't give silicon circuits any threat when it's running at just 0.15Hz and takes up as much space as a mini fridge, but the hope is to dramatically speed up and shrink down future iterations to where there are advanced computers that occupy the same size as real muscles. Researchers ultimately envision smart prosthetic limbs with near-natural reflexes, completely soft robots with complex gestures and even a switch from digital to analog computing for some tasks. Although we're quite a distance away from any of those muscle-bound ideas becoming everyday realities, it's good to at least see them on the horizon.

Will The Next iPhone Keep Ahead of Android?

If Apple?s regular release schedule is to be trusted, we should expect a new iPhone this summer. Will it be called the iPhone 5S with small improvements over the iPhone 5? Or will the pressure from rival Android phones force Apple to go big and make a complete overhaul?

So far, the rumor mills point to an incremental upgrade ? no revolutionary changes. So let?s read the tealeaves and try to predict what will be changed. And remember, this is all conjecture with no official information forthcoming from Apple.

New Flash and Better Camera
I like to start with the fun stuff, like the camera. Certainly, the next iPhone could get a megapixel upgrade. There are some Android phones that brag 13 Megapixels, and while it?s possible Apple could increase the resolution of their camera, I think a more interesting upgrade would be the inclusion of a new, smart flash that incorporates Phillips multi-color LED. To match ambient light, the camera could elect to use a white flash (in fluorescent or colder lighting) or a yellow flash to match warmer room tones (candlelight, camp-fires, or accent lighting).

Faster
Now for the guts of the new phone: leaked photos published by iOSDoc imply the iPhone will be getting an upgrade from its current dual core A6 processor to a quad core A7 processor. Yes, more cores mean a faster phone, but is this a life-changing speed improvement? Um, no.

Bigger Screen is Doubtful
There have been tons of rumors about Apple increasing the screen size from 4 inches to 4.8 inches to compete with some of the Android ?Phablets? like the Note. But this rumor seems a little thin with CEO Tim Cook stating publically on Apple?s Q1 2013 Earnings Call that he thinks Apple made the right decision to stick with a smaller screen.

Wireless Charging
Unlike current wireless charging where you have to put a device onto a pad that?s plugged into a power source, Apple has applied for a patent to use something called Near Field Magnetic Resonance (NFMR). With this technology, a home base (a computer or larger device) serves as a hub that can charge the phone anywhere within a meter?s proximity. This could also be a boon for selling more Mac laptops if they become the primary vehicle for wireless NFMR charging.

Biometric Fingerprint Security
Rumors are flying about a fingerprint sensor on the home key to allow for biometric security. This could be a smart idea if Apple wants to shore up public perception of the device?s security before rolling out the Near Field Communications (NFC) wave-to-pay technology that turns your phone into a credit card.

IOS 7
For the first time ever, I am including an IOS update in the ?Fun Rumors? category. While the iPhone operating system (currently IOS 6) is not usually an opportunity for big innovation, this portion of the company has recently been taken over by Jonathon Ive, Apple?s superstar design guru. He is no doubt feeling pressure to bring his genius to bear on software (good luck with that) and may surprise us with a few cool new tricks. I expect a Siri upgrade at the very least, and a determination to show that Apple?s maps have recovered from the debacle of the IOS 6 roll out.

Lower Cost iPhone
Where Android phones pose the greatest clear and present danger to the iPhone is on price. Many models are free with a 2-year contract. So the $199 price tag of the iPhone with a 2-year contract is just too steep for many. The biggest price pressure is coming from emerging markets like China and Brazil, where Apple has to lower the price of their only phone in the initial land grab for new smartphone users.

[Related: Do Apple Products Ever Go On Sale?]

If Apple introduces a free-on-2-year-contract phone, this lower cost version will almost certainly still be able to access faster LTE data networks. It will possibly have a slower Snapdragon System on a Chip (SOC) processor from Qualcomm. It might include a bigger battery, which could increase the phone?s thickness from the current 7.6 mm to a rumored 8.2 mm. It could have a lower resolution camera. And the most interesting possibility: its case could be from a cheaper plastic or fiberglass, which could allow for a multitude of colors.

Bottom Line
The inclusion of a cheaper iPhone could be a huge boon to consumers. If you?ve been holding out until Apple?s flagship device became more affordable, don?t let the slightly diminished technical specs deter you. The beauty of the iPhone is that it?s intuitive and fun to use ? but that?s a function of the operating system, not the hardware. If it were me, I?d wait to buy until the consumer testers run the cheaper iPhone through it?s paces and make sure there?s nothing glaringly wrong, and then I?d get it. That is, if Apple actually releases two versions as part of its traditional June release cycle.

Historical contingency and the futility of reductionism: Why chemistry (and biology) is not physics

Even an omniscient being like Dr. Manhattan from Watchmen could not have predicted the result of life's accidents (Image: Christian Fearing Godman)

The reductionist zeitgeist of physics cannot ?explain? chemistry any more than ?entropy? explains the inexorable march of life from birth to death. It?s important to understand what we mean when we say that physics cannot explain chemistry. Physics of course accounts for chemistry in the trite sense that molecules are composed of atoms. But then physics also ?accounts for? human behavior since the brain is ultimately composed of atoms too. Yet we have no clue how to get from atoms to things like jealousy and musical creativity. When we say that A explains B, it usually means there is an unbroken and logical thread of continuity connecting A to B by way of which the properties of A are manifestly demonstrated in B. This physics cannot do even in the highly reductionist realm of chemistry, let alone in ?higher? realms like neuroscience and sociology. These days emergence has become a fashionable word that?s often thrown around to describe any kind of complexity, but the emergence of chemical and biological properties that cannot be deduced from their underlying physics is in fact quite real.

There are several reasons why the reductionist approach in science doesn?t always work, but one of the most important ones was alluded to by the physicist and writer Jeremy Bernstein in a Wall Street Journal review of a biography of George Gamow and Max Delbruck:

Some sciences are more unruly than others. Here?s a parable to illustrate what I mean. Imagine that when the first life form appeared there was a super intelligent freak. If this freak had had a complete knowledge of the laws of physics, what could it have predicted? Quite a lot. All atomic nuclei consist of neutrons and protons, and the number of protons determines each element?s chemical nature. Knowing this, the freak could have predicted all the elements that could possibly exist, along with their respective characteristics. Suppose that it also knew all the laws of biology, including the ?central dogma,? which explains how genes are expressed as proteins. Even so, it could not have predicted the existence of giraffes, nor even the fact that my brother and I share only half our genes. Both of these are evolutionary accidents. If it had not been for random mutation there would be no giraffes, and my brother and I might have shared all our genes, as male bumblebees do. Biology is not like physics.

This paragraph succinctly drills down to one of the fundamental limitations of physics-based reductionism and it?s a point that applies to chemistry as well. It?s a very important one. The problem is that reductionism cannot account for the role of historical contingency and accident. Even if an all-powerful being could account for all biological scenarios emerging from an initial state of the universe, it could never tell us why one particular scenario is preferred over others. As Bernstein says, evolutionary accidents by definition cannot be predicted from starting conditions because they depend on chance and opportunity.

In addition function can never be uniquely derived from reductionism even if structure is. For instance in his book ?Reinventing the Sacred?, the complexity theorist Stuart Kauffman makes a powerful argument that even if one could derive the structure of the human heart from string theory in principle, string theory would never tell us that its most important function is to pump blood. The function of biological organs arose as an adaptive consequence of the countless unpredictable constraints that molded them during evolution. In addition the evolution of both structure and function was a mix-and-match process that depended as much on chance encounters as on strict adaptation. All this can never be captured in a reductionist worldview.

The same principle applies to chemistry. Evolution has fashioned many unique molecules that underpin life?s machinery. The question facing many chemists and especially chemists working on the origins of life is, why this particular molecule and not that one? Here are some more specific conundrums: Why are there only twenty amino acids, why are there alpha amino acids instead of beta or gamma amino acids (which have extra carbon atoms), why is amino acid stereochemistry (molecular ?handedness?) L while sugar stereochemistry is D, why does DNA consist of a very specific set of four nucleotides and no other, why did nature choose phosphates in the construction of so many important biomolecules (the chemist Frank Westheimer comes close to answering this question), why does a given protein fold into only one unique functional structure, why is water is the only solvent known to sustain life, and in general why are the myriad small and large molecules of life what they are. In retrospect of course one could provide several arguments for the existence of these molecules based on stability, function and structure but there is no way to predict these parameters prospectively.

The fact is that an all-powerful, super-reductionist freak would have been useless in accounting for the unique existence of life?s chemical precursors. This is because there is nothing in the nature of these molecules which dictates that their presence should have been uniquely determined. For instance we now know from chemical studies that beta and gamma amino acids can also fold into the kind of helix and sheets motifs that are ubiquitous for alpha amino acids. They also have other favorable properties like chemical diversity which might have made them better building blocks compared to alpha amino acids. Yet for some reason they were discarded during evolution. Why? We could come up with several arguments. For instance because of their floppiness, maybe the higher order versions had to pay an unacceptable entropic penalty that could not compensate for their folding propensity. Or maybe a reaction called the Strecker reaction that is thought to produce alpha amino acids could never be superseded by beta amino acid-forming chemical reactions. Or perhaps alpha amino acids shield hydrophobic or water-hating side chains much better than their longer chain counterparts. These are all cogent reasons, and yet I am sure we could find an equal number of arguments against alpha amino acids if we searched hard enough. The truth is that the ultimate failure to find an explanation for the existence of alpha amino acids is a powerful reminder of the importance that chance and circumstance played in the evolution of both biomolecules as well as living organisms. Reductionism does not help us in tracing a path through this random, probabilistic landscape of evolution. The identities of life?s fundamental building blocks were shaped by chance followed by Darwinian natural selection.

This role of contingency and accident is one of the most important reasons why the reduction of chemistry and biology to physics will not work. Even if reductionism could provide us a list of all possible scenarios in chemical and biological evolution, it could never tell us which one would be preferred and for what reason. This is yet another reason why chemistry and biology are not physics.

iCloud gets kicked in the Core Data sync -- totally had it coming

iCloud gets kicked in the Core Data sync -- totally had it coming

iCloud, specifically the part of it that covers the frameworks Apple has provided to developers to sync Core Data databases, has been getting kicked around lately, and by almost all accounts, deservedly so.Back in November, developers like Instacast's Vemedio and Steve Streza of Informal Protocol posted about its opacity and Paul Haddad expressed on similar concerns during the second episode of Debug. More even than ensuring the reliability of Siri and Game Center, it felt like proof positive that Apple faced significant challenge in a future where services were table-stakes.

As much as I think iOS 7 and iCloud are more important for Apple than next-generation hardware at this point, I think iCloud is more important than iOS 7 because, for Apple, it'll be an even bigger challenge. iCloud, more so even that Dropbox, is the future, it just doesn't work yet.

Since those initial developer posts, more have have come forward to share their experiences with iCloud Core Data sync, or in some cases document sync, and they share the same frustrations.

In a post intended to reassure users of NetNewsWire about the app's future in a post-Google Reader world, iCloud issues again reared their ugly head. Daniel Pasco of BlackPixel wrote:

As far as sync is concerned, we knew we would likely need an alternative to Google Reader as early as last year. At the time, the option that seemed to make the most sense was to embrace iCloud and Core Data as the new sync solution of choice. We spent a considerable amount of time on this effort, but iCloud and Core Data syncing had issues that we simply could not resolve.

What seems to make the ongoing issues so vexing for developers is that iCloud was introduced with iOS 5 back in 2011, and while iOS 6 in 2012 was an improvement, it wasn't anywhere nearly improvement enough.

Ellis Hamburger of The Verge did a brilliant job summing up much of the reaction and reasoning up, calling iCloud Core Data sync a broken promise:

Many veteran developers have learned their lesson and given up on iCloud?s Core Data syncing entirely. "Ultimately, when we looked at iCloud + Core Data for [our app], it was a total no-go as nothing would have worked," said one best-selling iPhone and Mac developer. "Some issues with iCloud Core Data are theoretically unsolvable (stemming from the fact that you?ve put an object model on top of a distributed data store) and others are just plain bugs in the implementation," he said.

One of the reasons for this is that, just like with Game Center APIs, Apple has very little skin in the Core Data sync game. They're not making massive use of it, so they're not the first ones hitting pain points and problems. Their developers are, and that's a terrible, terrible thing for everyone.

Matthew Panzarino of The Next Web also pointed out that Apple conflating several distinct services all under the iCloud banner further compounds the problem developers face:

Recent criticism of Apple?s iCloud has exposed just how fractured the brand actually is behind the scenes. Developers are having problems with some of the technologies bundled together under the name and it?s causing some confusion. The truth of the matter is that there are really two iClouds, which couldn?t be more different.

Users who get their mail, contacts, or calendars synched without issue just don't understand what developers are complaining about because, for them, iCloud works, it just doesn't work in that developer's app. Some users think the developers are actually incompetent or lying.

Glassboard developer Brent Simmons, on Inessential, pointed out that that's the risk of depending on systems you can't control:

How comfortable are you with outsourcing half your app to another company? The answer should be: not at all comfortable.

Just like services are the future for Apple, they're the future for a lot of developers. More important than hardware, arguably more important than software when that is already a core competency, iCloud is what Apple has to nail. Rather than getting kicked around, iCloud has to kick ass.

I-Mego Walker Junior

There's no shortage of noise-canceling headphones on the market currently, but there's a definite lack of quality, inexpensive options. At $139.99 (direct), I-Mego's Walker Junior (no association with the musician Junior Walker intended, it seems) is inexpensive and its noise canceling circuitry is decent. However, while it does an admirable job blocking out ambient noise, considering its price, its relative success in this realm is balanced by distortion issues at high volumes. The Walker Junior is designed well, with a removable cable and collapsible design, and is a reasonable budget option to consider if your top priority is noise cancellation and not audio performance.

Design
There's something edgy and almost futuristic about the design of the Walker Junior. The all-black, matte surface is graced by a white X on each earcup which, from a distance, looks almost as if it has been stitched into the surface.

The padded headband features a hinge at the center of the top panel?it folds in half at this point, and then hinges above the earpads allow it to fold down flat. This ergonomic design allows for easy storage and packing, and does so without sacrificing comfort?the Walker Junior stays comfortable over long listening sessions.I-Mego Walker Junior inline

Unfortunately, the headphones use a AAA battery instead of a rechargeable one. The battery compartment, as well as the On/Off switch for the noise cancellation circuitry, is located on the right earcup, while the cable connects to the left.

The cable is removable, which adds some value to the headphones, as cables are often the culprit when a pair begins to malfunction?replacing a cable is far more affordable than replacing an otherwise functional headphone pair. There's no inline remote or microphone for mobile devices, but this is fairly standard for noise-canceling headphones.?

Also included: a ?-inch headphone jack adapter, an airplane jack adapter, a zip-up protective pouch which the headphone collapse and fold down into, and the aforementioned AAA battery and detachable cable.

Performance
On songs with deep bass, like The Knife's "Silent Shout," the Walker Junior struggles at top volumes with distortion. These top volumes are too loud to listen to for long periods of time, however, and at high?but not maximum?levels, the distortion begins to disappear. At about 75 percent volume on an iPhone 4s, there was no distortion at all, and the sub-bass frequencies of the synth kick drums were delivered with plenty of low frequency presence. This was with the noise cancellation activated.

With the headphones in passive mode (the power switched to off), the headphones lose a significant bit of volume, as well as what feels like a little brightness. The same track from the Knife, however, does not distort at top volume in passive mode, and there is still a decent sense of low frequency response.

Tracks with less challenging low frequency content, like Bill Callahan's "Drover", still suffer from some far less noticeable distortion at top, unsafe listening levels, while at lower volumes, there's no hint of anything but clean audio. At these levels, with the noise cancellation engaged, the sound signature seems a bit muted, as if it could benefit from a bit of added brightness or crispness in the high-mids. Callahan's vocals are missing the treble edge that lends some gravel to his baritone delivery here. The lower frequencies are a bit more gracefully represented, with the drumming on this track receiving a nice bit of low-end thump, without things going overboard and the drums taking the focus away from the vocals.

Similar characteristics are highlighted by Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild." The kick drum loop that starts the song off, as well as the vocals, could all use a bit of high-mid edge to them, to add more definition to the mix. The sub-bass synth hits underneath the drum loop, however, as well as the sustain of kick drum, have a nice, round bass presence to them?nothing overwhelming, but a good level of power (at moderate volumes). Both the Callahan and the Jay-Z/Kanye West track would benefit from a slightly brighter, crisper presence from the high-mids and up. The mix is not muffled, but it does lean more to the lows and low-mids.

As for its noise cancellation performance, the Walker Junior does a good job of eliminating a fairly wide band of ambient noise, but like most noise cancellation circuitry in this price range, it also delivers this noise reduction with an audible high frequency hiss. It's not very loud, you won't hear it when you're playing music, and it sounds like very faint tape hiss, so it's nothing really that unpleasant. It's a sign, however, of lower quality noise reduction circuitry than you'll find, say, in a Bose QuietComfort 15.

If quality noise reduction?and no hiss when there's no music playing?is a top priority, the Bose QC15 is probably the way to go. However, unlike the Walker Junior, the QC15 cannot be used in passive mode, when the circuitry is turned off. If excellent sonic performance is your main priority, but you don't want to miss out on quality noise cancellation, the AKG K 490 NC remains a premium option?both pairs are pricier than the Walker Junior.

But that's just the issue: You're not going to find high quality noise cancellation paired with great audio performance for $140. If you can spend a little more, the?Logitech UE 6000 doesn't suffer from the same distortion issues and offers some serious bass response, and the in-ear Phiaton PS 20 NC offers strong audio performance?but you have to be okay with going the in-canal earphone route, rather than with headphones. For the price, the Walker Junior delivers solid noise cancellation, but it's not on-par with better pairs mentioned here, and in terms of audio performance, it's also outmatched. Its greatest assets are its price, its detachable cable, and the ability to use it in passive mode?but the distortion will be an understandable deal-breaker for some.

Questionable Entries Prompt Google To Retract Some Glass Explorer Invitations

Greg_Glass_framesGoogle made plenty of nerds happy earlier this week when it began reaching out to the 8,000 people that would have the privilege of spending $1,500 on the company's head-mounted Glass display, but that thrill wound up being short-lived for some. About seven hours after announcing that the outreach to would-be Glass Explorers began, the Glass team once again took to the project's Google Plus page to admit they needed to rescind some of those invitations.

Stocks creep up; Dow rises for seventh day running

NEW YORK (AP) ? The stock market crept higher Monday, pushing the Dow Jones industrial average to its seventh straight day of gains.

Boeing was the Dow's top stock, surging 2 percent. A Boeing executive reportedly said he's confident the aircraft maker has figured out a fix for the battery problems that have grounded the 787 Dreamliner.

The last time the Dow rose for seven consecutive days was March 2012. The latest streak began on March 1. Last Tuesday, the blue-chip index blew past its all-time high, then kept climbing to end the week up 2 percent.

On Monday, the Dow rose 50.22 points to end the day at 14,447.29, an increase of 0.3 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index edged up 5.04 points, also 0.3 percent, to close at 1,556.22. The index, the most popular market measure for investment funds, is nine points shy of its all-time closing high reached in October 2007.

The Nasdaq composite added 8.51 points to 3,252.87.

The S&P 500 gains were broad, though slight. Nine of the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 rose, led by financial companies. That's a sign many investors believe the market and economy are on solid footing, said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial. When the economy picks up, financial firms and companies in other cyclical industries tend to benefit more than others.

For the year, the Dow is up 10 percent and the S&P 500 up 9 percent.

The stock market's fast start has prompted some analysts to worry that the rally could quickly fizzle out. Although recent economic reports have painted a better picture, the U.S. economy is still growing slowly. It expanded at an annual rate of 0.1 percent in the final three months of 2012. And Europe remains in a recession.

There were no major economic reports to drive trading on Monday. Later in the week, the government will release figures for the federal budget in February, as well as reports on consumer prices and industrial production

On Friday, the Labor Department said that U.S. employers added 236,000 workers to their payrolls in February, pushing the unemployment rate down to 7.7 percent, the lowest since December 2008.

In the Treasury market, the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note edged up to 2.05 percent from 2.04 percent late Friday.

The 10-year Treasury yield began the year around 1.70 percent and has climbed steadily higher since then as worries about a recession have eased. Traders have shifted money out of the Treasury market, lifting yields up.

Among other companies making moves Monday:

? Dick's Sporting Goods sank 11 percent to $45.11, after the retailer posted slightly weaker earnings and revenue than analysts had expected. The Pittsburgh-based company said it responded to a warm December by cutting its inventory of cold-weather clothes. But that move likely hampered sales when temperatures dropped in January.

? News that billionaire investor Carl Icahn will get access to Dell's private financial records lifted shares in the computer maker. Icahn is fighting Michael Dell's plan to take the struggling company private for $24 billion, claiming the purchase price is too low. Dell's stock rose 21 cents to $14.37.

If there was any confusion on that point, the reigning NBA champions might have cleared that up Sunday night.

Mario Chalmers scored 26 points, Chris Bosh added 24 and the Heat won their 18th straight game, easily topping the Indiana Pacers 105-91 ? even with James scoring only a season-low 13, yet clearly helping control play with seven assists and six rebounds.

"That's the thing about our team," Chalmers said. "We can click on all cylinders."

The streak ties the seventh longest in NBA history, and is the league's best since the Boston Celtics won 19 straight in November and December 2008.

"We just did what we're supposed to do," said Dwyane Wade, who added 23 points and six steals for Miami. "Win at home."

Ray Allen added 11 for Miami (47-14), which now has a victory over every NBA team this season. The Heat had been 0-2 against the Pacers.

"When you can win like this, we can go home, we can breathe easier, food tastes better, it makes life a lot better," Allen said. "That's the goal and I'm sure everybody in this locker room will say the same."

David West scored 17 of his 24 points in the first half for the Pacers, who fell nine games behind Miami in the Eastern Conference standings. Roy Hibbert scored 15, D.J. Augustin had 14 and Paul George scored 10 for Indiana.

The Heat held a 27-15 edge in points off turnovers and finished the game shooting 56 percent compared with 41 percent by Indiana.

"We didn't compete from the opening tip," West said. "I just don't think we brought enough competitive fire. LeBron James has 13 points and these other guys ? Chalmers has 26 ? it's just not enough. We didn't compete enough. You can't beat a team like that in their building as well as they're playing without competing."

Those "other guys" did their jobs, none better than Chalmers.

Miami's point guard needed only nine shots to get his 26 points, going 5 for 6 from 3-point range and making all seven of his free throws. He also grabbed seven rebounds, tying a career high.

Since Nov. 17, 2010, there have been only two instances of a player scoring at least 26 points on nine shots or less, according to STATS LLC: Chalmers on Sunday, and a 27-point effort from Chris Paul earlier this season.

"All your guys have to be live options and Rio took that to heart," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "He took shots he was capable of making. ... He must be aggressive against the better defensive teams in the league."

The Pacers warmed up at the basket the Heat typically use, and just about every starter kept pre-game pleasantries such as handshakes and quick hugs to a minimum. And there were moments of physicality, but nothing near the level of those body-flying, blood-drawing clobberings that came during last season's Eastern Conference semifinals.

Then again, that series was competitive throughout. This game was essentially over just after halftime.

Miami led by nine after the opening quarter, the second-largest deficit the Pacers faced after 12 minutes all season. Indiana hardly folded; the Pacers used a 24-14 run to get within two when West scored with 2:57 left before the half. The margin was still only six in the final minute before intermission.

But the Heat couldn't have scripted a better final 6.9 seconds of the half.

After a deflection sent all the defensive matchups askew, James found himself being guarded 1-on-1 by Hibbert, so he simply drove past the 7-foot-2 center for a slam. Wade then stole the ball from George near midcourt with about 3 seconds left, took a couple dribbles and hit a 12-footer over Hibbert's outstretched arm as time expired, giving Miami a 56-46 lead at the break.

Miami missed its first shot of the second half, then didn't miss another field-goal attempt for eight minutes.

"We used that momentum," James said.

Seven straight makes by Miami fueled what became a 21-7 run, and essentially took away any mystery about the outcome. What was an eight-point game turned into a 77-55 Heat lead, the margin exactly doubling the biggest leads Miami held over Indiana in the first two meetings between the clubs this season ? combined.

From there, yes, there were reminders that these teams aren't exactly fond of one another.

Stephenson, who made a choke sign at the Heat during last year's playoffs, then was the subject of a flagrant foul from now-former Heat backup Dexter Pittman later in that series, drove the lane with 3:05 left in the third period and drew a hard foul from Battier. Stephenson remained down for a few moments, and a video review confirmed that Battier made a play on the ball, so anything beyond a common shooting foul wasn't merited.

It might have fired up Indiana a bit as the Pacers scored the final nine points of the third quarter to get within 79-65.

They could have gotten two more points closer if not for a brilliant defensive play by James in the final seconds. George got free for a layup, but James stalked him on the break and swatted away the shot.

"Tough loss," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. "Give credit to the Heat for really outplaying us."

NOTES: The 18 straight wins ties for the second-best streak by a reigning NBA champion. Boston won 19 straight in the season after the 2008 title, and the Celtics won 18 in a row after claiming the 1981 championship. ... Vogel picked up a technical early in the fourth quarter. ... Shane Battier's streak of making a 3-pointer in 18 straight games ended. He did not attempt a shot from beyond the arc. ... After the game, the Heat recalled Jarvis Varnado from the NBA Development League.

10 Reasons Writers Should Claim Their Google Authorship Markup ...

Image of Google+ Logo

To say Stephen King is prolific is a gross understatement. Since he published his first novel (Carrie) back in 1973, he?s written more than 70 more.

Early in King?s career, he wanted to write and publish constantly ? which was against the prevailing wisdom of the time ? and eventually convinced Signet to let him release a few books under the pen name ?Richard Bachmann.?

King also wanted to answer the question of whether success was related to luck or talent. He went as far as purposefully suppressing the marketing of his Bachmann books.

His little experiment ended prematurely when someone outed Bachmann as King ? but the results were clear. The Bachmann book Thinner sold 28,000 copies during its initial run. When it was identified as a book by King, it sold ten times as many.

When it comes to creating great content ? it really does matter who you are.

And this is equally true online.

Introducing authorship markup

Authorship markup might prove to one of the most confusing conversations in our Author Rank series.

For one, many people think authorship is the same thing as Author Rank. Repeat after me:

Authorship markup is not the same thing as Author Rank.

Authorship markup is the method to display authorship information in search results for the content you create. For example, this shows up on page one of the SERPs for the phrase ?content marketing?:

Authorship is how Google knows that an individual human being named Brian Clark published that article.

Author Rank, on the other hand, is an aspect of the search algorithm that Google appears to be implementing. There isn?t enough data yet to identify precisely how it works, but advances like authorship markup, Google+, Search Plus Your World, Agent Rank, and so on certainly look like they?ll play an increasingly major role.

Authorship markup is also confusing because it?s difficult to implement (or used to be).

But I?m getting ahead of myself ?

Authorship helps you stand out in search

Authorship markup made a big splash toward the end of 2011 ? about two months after Google+ launched.

Many people praised the move because of the impact it had on search results.

While by itself it wouldn?t help you rank higher (you still have to create great content), it would help you stand out.

Here?s an example. Do a search for ?intellectual snobbery? and this probably what you?ll see:

Any doubt on which link you will click on?

The headline alone is pretty tantalizing, but my mug shot beside the results ? it makes that listing stand out from the rest. (And yes, I?m quite pleased with those results. Does that surprise you?)

And, as you might have guessed, implementing authorship markup typically increases click through rates to your site.

With that in mind, let?s take a look at the top ten reasons you should claim your Google Authorship markup ?

Authorship benefit #1: Higher click through rates

Shortly after its implementation, sites ran tests to see how much it increased markup. In some cases the increase in click through was as high as 150%.

This is exactly what happened to Catalyst.

Cyrus Shepherd further increased free traffic with authorship markup by doing nothing more than plugging in a better headshot.

With authorship markup implemented, you also get this sweet byline in your search rankings:

Here?s what those links do:

  • Click on ?by Brian Clark? and you will land on his Google+ page.
  • Click on ?More by Brian Clark? and you?ll land on a page that serves as a mini search engine that serves all the examples in which ?content marketing? and ?Brian Clark? are mentioned.

Those links are potential clickthroughs, too.

Authorship benefit #2: Higher visibility

Look back at that image for the search phrase ?intellectual snobbery.? I might as well have the number one spot because my listing stands out from the others.

That visibility is a huge advantage.

In fact, eye tracking studies are showing us that the eye is first drawn to the image, then to the headline (which is why writing seductive headlines is so important).

Furthermore, studies have shown that by placing a photo so that you?re looking to the right (toward your listing) encourages people to actually look at your listing.

(If you want more hints and tips on creating an image that stands out, take a look at the Google Authorship and Author Rank community?s Authorship 101: Basics page.)

Let?s look at another interesting perk of authorship markup.

Authorship benefit #3: Higher page views

Imagine someone clicks your listing, wanders down your page for about two minutes, and then, satisfied, hits the back button.

The search results page they land on will be slightly different. See if you can spot what?s new:

It?s the additional links beneath Charissa?s listing. Those weren?t there before, and they actually equal more opportunities to get people to look at your content.

Google is probably thinking this: if someone clicks through to your page, but bounces out immediately, then your content is weak, and the user is not interested in seeing more.

If they stayed on your page for at least two minutes, however, that demonstrates to Google that your page has value, and perhaps other pages will provide additional information useful to the user.

In other words, SEO and user experience are blood brothers.

This is yet another signal in the Google machine that suggests useful, unique, and authoritative content is valued and rewarded ? but it also reinforces another idea very important to us: the writer runs this show.

Why Google implemented authorship markup

Authorship markup and Google+ are two sides of the same coin.

Google+ is the identity platform (which is why your Google+ ID is a long string of numbers, not unlike your Social Security or driver?s license number) ? and now authorship markup is the digital signature.

Exactly what they need to pull off something like Author Rank.

In essence, Google is saying ? we want to make sure that you are a real human being ? we want to stamp out anonymity and spam ? we want to regard you as someone who is willing to put your name on the line for the content you create and share.

So ? are you willing to put your name on the line?

Seven more benefits claiming authorship markup ?

Together, authorship markup and Google+ work hand in hand to deliver some pretty slick benefits to the writer ? to signal that the writer truly does run the show.

I?ve already mentioned the big three above. But for those who need further proof that authorship is worth claiming, here are seven more:

  1. Beat plagiarism ? With authorship markup, the original author will be pushed to the top of the search results over content scrapers.
  2. Elevate the role of the writer ? As you build your reputation in two or three specific categories, and your content follows you around ? businesses will start to recognize the value of a good writer ? and stop paying malt liquor prices for exquisite craft beer product.
  3. Verify guest posts and comments ? Your Google profile also follows you across the web into comments and articles published on other blogs.
  4. Rank for different topics ? Author Rank isn?t a wholesale score, but rather ? broken down into categories. Which means you can be an expert in content marketing and skydiving without either of those categories watering down your score for the other. But this doesn?t mean you should try to be an expert in a dozen topics. Limit it to two or three.
  5. Build trust ? The recognition that you have a Google+ account and a headshot beside your search listing is going to separate you from the faceless content creators. David Gould said it best: ?For users, this reinforces the idea that the result is reputable: this link isn?t just the result of robotic SEO manipulation, but rather it?s from a human being who we can learn more about. Knowing that at least some minimal verification has gone on creates a trust factor with the user.?
  6. Establish authority ? An author with a Google+ follower count of 32,299 is going to be recognized as a higher authority than an author with an account of 3,299. Why? Because of a number of factors we discussed in the Google+ article. It?s not perfect, but it?s something. It?s social proof.
  7. Keep people from hijacking your name ? Finally, authorship markup will overcome the challenge that might occur when you share a common name like John Smith. Or, Brian Clark. If two articles appear in the search engines by people with the same name, the verified account will be deemed more credible.

What you need to do next ?

I need you to do three things. First, claim your content with authorship markup.

You can head over to Google authorship markup support and follow the directions (you have two options).

Or, if you have a WordPress site and are using the Genesis framework, then you can claim your content in three easy steps.

Next, I need you to join us on Google+. We?ve got a growing, lively community where we share smart online marketing content and groovy 80s music videos.

Finally, wait patiently for the last article in this series ? The Content Marketer?s Author Rank Cheat Sheet ? where I bring all of this home.

Cool?

Need advise on commercial financing

This is pretty much a local bank deal, the rule still applies the lower of cost or market within one year, after one year they lend off the market value. This isn't big enough to go to Prudential Commercial Financing or such. Small specialized lenders will usually have higher rates as well. O/W isn't so odd to finance, motels, churches, private schools or resorts are unusual enough to draw specialized lenders. Wait out the year and try again with local lenders, local to the property.

Higgs Boson update: it's cool, it exists, it's not necessarily so 'exotic'

Higgs Boson update being the God particle doesn't necessarily make you interesting

As a prominent musician once noted: all that hype doesn't feel the same next year, boy. And that's sadly proving true for our old friend Higgs Boson, who shot to fame last Summer but is now waking up to find only a handful of fans camped outside his collider. Part of the problem is simply that things have become procedural and academic -- CERN scientists met in Italy this week to share their latest findings, but the updates were mostly either inconclusive or suggestive of a rather mundane-seeming subatomic entity.

At the time of Higgs' discovery, observers were especially interested in the possibility that this mysterious particle didn't decay in exactly the way science had predicted. It seemed to break down into an excess of photons, such that it might potentially reveal something unexpected about dark matter and the structure of space-time. But as data continues to be gathered, it appears more likely that the extra photons may have been a statistical anomaly, leading one researcher to admit on Twitter that his ATLAS team is "not too excited" about it anymore. Nothing is confirmed at this point, however, and other scientists have since tweeted to caution against jumping to conclusions. At least we can say for sure that Higgs still exists. And if the poor thing can't hold the universe together and mess with the laws of physics at the same time, then so be it.

UIU Android launcher targets non-techie users with easy cloud management (video)

UIU

Emblaze Mobile's First Else may be no more, but its legacy lives on. During MWC we caught up with the company's ex-CEO, Amir Kupervas, who started a company called UIU in June 2011 -- only a month after his departure and almost a year after the tantalizing First Else got canned. Over at UIU, Kupervas and UX strategist Itay Levin (who also took part in the First Else project) have a more humble ambition: to offer an Android launcher and an accompanying cloud management platform that are simple enough for non-techie users. "In the US, smartphones generate twice as much the amount of calls to the customer centers than the featurephones," said Kupervas. "There's a lot of hustle and a lot of confusion on how to work these guys. People are struggling with them, even existing users."

A look at H+ The Digital Series with its creators | Geek Pick | Geek.com

Hplus Interview

How do you take a transhumanism story and accidentally turn it into a statement on modern technology? John Cabrera and Cosimo De Tomosso, the writers of a unique webseries called H+ The Digital Series talked to me for a little while and offered up their view of how that exact thing happened.

The Show So Far

One third of the global population is dead. There was no time to do anything, no way you could have possibly known it was coming, but it happened. If this were your future, there?s a relatively good chance that you as the reader of this article would be dead. Maybe it was an accident, or maybe it was the will of a group of people who felt a message needed to be sent and the global balance of power needed to be adjusted. Whatever happened, there?s no way to undo what has been done. A full third of the global population gone in an instant, all because they were connected to a piece of technology that was embedded into their body and mind.

Like any good show, H+ starts off with infinitely more questions than answers. By the time you?ve reached the end of the first season, there?s a dozen new questions for every answer provided, and as the writers of the show sit down to flesh out the script for season two, the real world has already caught up to the story in some interesting ways.

Hplus Interview

H+ starts off by introducing a world where most of the functions of the smartphone you keep in your pocket have been transferred to an interface that only you can see, because the smartphone is in your brain. Your user interface is projected out in front of you, and the user swipes and pokes at thin air in order to interact with the computer. Your mind is always connected to the Internet as a result of this technology, and the lines between your computer and your body are permanently blurred.

John Cabrera and Cosimo De Tomosso began working on a story back in 2006 that introduced some wild technological advances in order to help tell an exciting cyberpunk-esque story. This story was conceptualized before the rise of the modern smartphone, before touch interfaces were globally commonplace, and before YouTube was seriously viewed as a place for premium content. As the tech world continued to evolve, season one of H+ found itself in a place where it is easier than ever to not only believe the story being told, but to find yourself wanting the tech in the series as though it were being released tomorrow.

Every episode starts from the point of view of one character or another. You look right through their eyes, usually so you can see the digital world as they interact with it. Most of the technology in this show relies on a special interaction with the eyes in one way or another. The embedded technology, for obvious reasons, uses your eyes as projectors for data.

Meanwhile the writers have re-invented netbooks to look like interconnecting slabs of glass that don?t do much until you slide on a special pair of glasses that reveal the operating system only to you. There?s also transparent smartphones that seem to be aware of when there?s a pair of eyes gazing on them, and shows the user information based on the area they are in and the activities they are currently involved with. It?s so easy to see how current technology is already headed down these paths, and it?s really exciting to watch.

Hplus Interview

Moore?s Law and CyberPunk

During my interview with John and Cosimo, the two took a look back at the concepts they researched heavily in order to integrate them as if they were advanced future concepts that are now incredibly common. In 2006, where smartphones were really just PDAs with very slow Internet connections, it was impossible to guess that we?d have gotten as far as we have in less than ten years: an always on, always connected generation of users that treat Android and iOS as though they have been around forever and will continue to exist for as long as they are alive; cloud services that act as household names, powerful enough that tablets can be used as personal computers. In many ways, the technology in H+ is just as sci-fi now as our current generation of technology would seem to someone in 2006.

As you jump around in time and explore the technology in the show, you come across the antagonist group that is somehow responsible for the attack that killed so many people. This group uses a piece of technology that is similar in many ways to the now mainstream H+ units, but intentionally setup to be fundamentally different in what it is used for. Where H+ is beautifully designed with an elegant user interface that allows the user to glide through a connected world, you can only do what the creator allows you to do with it. Meanwhile this rival piece of technology is not nearly as pretty, but highly functional.

It?s hinted in several points during the first season that the more technical implant is much more powerful, but its only available to a limited group of people. This unnamed rival implant also seems to grant mental and physical enhancements to the host body, clearly demonstrating a different relationship with the host body.

John and Cosimo both laughed when I drew the immediate parallel between iOS and Android, and reminded me that the concepts they had been working on were on the table before either of those platforms were on the market. The truth is that there have always been tech rivalries like the ones we experience today, though Cabrera pointed out that the intensity with which users embrace the Android ecosystem certainly reminded him of concepts that he and De Tomasso have sewn the seeds for with the rival group in the show.

Google?s other buzzworthy yet unreleased tech, Project Glass, has caught the eye of these two writers, especially as they see the excitement for that tech as a direct comparison to how they imagined the world would have responded initially to the implant they invented for the series. John Cabrera commented several times about how eager he was to use Glass and see how close to he and Cosimo?s vision of the future we?ve really come.

NYT: Samsung Galaxy S IV will tout eye-based scrolling

Samsung Galaxy S IV will reportedly tout eyebased scrolling

One of the Galaxy S III's most vaunted features was Smart Stay: when it was active, the smartphone's display would stay awake as long as its owner did. A reported Samsung insider's tip to the New York Times claims the Galaxy S IV will take that intelligent use of the camera one step further with eye-based scrolling. Theoretically, readers will never have to put finger to glass when scrolling downwards; the phone can tell when they're looking at the bottom of the page and move to the next section on its own. The hands-off scrolling is supposedly part of a strategy where the software ultimately matters more than the hardware. Chief product officer Kevin Packingham wouldn't confirm anything for the newspaper when asked, although he didn't feel the hardware will take a back seat. Either way, consider us intrigued -- as long as the software is real, and works in practice. We'll know the full story in several days.
